Charity homes built by Hollywood start to crumble

“Residents of a model housing estate bankrolled by Hollywood celebrities and hand-built by Jimmy Carter, the former US president, are complaining that it is falling apart.

Fairway Oaks was built on northern Florida wasteland by 10,000 volunteers, including Carter, in a record 17-day ‘blitz’ organised by the charity Habitat for Humanity.

Eight years later it is better known for cockroaches, mildew and mysterious skin rashes.”

Jimmy Carter…a failure as a president, as a Middle East peace negotiator and as a builder.

Jimmy Carter aside, after reading the comments, I did have to wonder how much blame the residents have to bear for the state of their houses.  If they were the kind of people who weren’t willing or able to get a home on their own, were they really the kind of people who would take care of a house that was given to them?  It also brought to mind the phenomena of the homeowners who were fortunate enough to have foreclosure postponed that still aren’t paying their mortgage.
