Orbusmax had this one up today.

MSNBC Poll of 1.8 million:  Obama earns “F”

This article comes to us courtesy of WorldNet Daily.  Apparently the results aren’t really in line with the MSNBC agenda so they’re not making a big deal of it.  I searched for it using the search box at the top of the MSNBC home page and didn’t find it.  When I searched on Google (which, incidentally, significantly increased my carbon footprint) several blog posts came up first but I actually did find the MSNBC poll page.  If you’d like to vote, click here.

Obama’s poll numbers interpreted

Posted by Liberty on March 15, 2009

Obama’s Poll Numbers Are Falling to Earth

“It is simply wrong for commentators to continue to focus on President Barack Obama’s high levels of popularity, and to conclude that these are indicative of high levels of public confidence in the work of his administration. Indeed, a detailed look at recent survey data shows that the opposite is most likely true. The American people are coming to express increasingly significant doubts about his initiatives, and most likely support a different agenda and different policies from those that the Obama administration has advanced.”

While I agree that it is simply wrong for commentators to keep gushing about Obama’s popularity [while ignoring the growing unpopularity of his socialist policies] it probably isn’t going to stop.  After all, some may say that it was wrong of the MSM to whitewash Obama’s record as the most liberal Senator.  What about ignoring his radical associations with people like Reverend Wright, Father Pfleger and William Ayers?  How about not investigating his career prior to being elected to office?  The MSM has displayed more curiosity about Michelle Obama’s biceps than about the real Barack Obama and how his left-wing policies will affect America.

“Polling data show that Mr. Obama’s approval rating is dropping and is below where George W. Bush was in an analogous period in 2001. Rasmussen Reports data shows that Mr. Obama’s net presidential approval rating — which is calculated by subtracting the number who strongly disapprove from the number who strongly approve — is just six, his lowest rating to date.”

Did you catch that?  Lower than George W. Bush!

“Overall, Rasmussen Reports shows a 56%-43% approval, with a third strongly disapproving of the president’s performance. This is a substantial degree of polarization so early in the administration. Mr. Obama has lost virtually all of his Republican support and a good part of his Independent support, and the trend is decidedly negative.”

And suddenly, I’m feeling positive.

Obama’s budget plan calls for increased tax enforcement…just not within his own cabinet

Posted by Liberty on February 22, 2009

Obama’s First Budget Seeks To Trim Deficit

So many things to write about within this article but so little patience for all things Obama!  He knows a lot of  people are outraged about the deficit spending stimulus plan.  By unveiling this latest plan to reduce the deficit, he’ll at least fool some of the huddled masses into thinking he’s not a big spender.  Of course, it doesn’t hurt that the useful idiots in the MSM are continuing their laudatory, incurious coverage of Obama.

I especially like how he’s made a couple of financial policy announcements this weekend–when the markets are closed.  Could it be that Obama has realized that the markets don’t seem to have much confidence in his abilities?  How much has the Dow tanked since America’s first true socialist president took office?

Obama’s budget calls for higher taxes on businesses and the wealthy [a smart recession move, eh?] and spending cuts.  Of course, Obama has not targeted wasteful spending, layers of bureaucracy and redistributive programs–those things will only grow throughout his administration.  Obama’s spending cuts will be from our ongoing military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.  More for food stamps, more to keep uncreditworthy buyers in homes they can’t afford, more for health care [but only if the government deems it cost-effective] and less for defending America against Islamic terrorism.  The bright side of all of this nonsense is that at least Obama is making it easier for Conservatives to make the distinction between their policies and those of the socialist liberals currently in charge.

The real kicker for me in this article was this quote:

“Obama also proposes “a fairly aggressive effort on tax enforcement” that would target corporate loopholes…”

Now why is it that he cares whether or not corporations pay their fair share of taxes while nominating a bunch of tax cheats for positions in his administration?  Geithner, Daschle, Killefer, Solis…those are just the ones we know about so far.  Hypocrisy, any one?

Senator Debbie Stabenow favors silencing Conservative dissent…because she knows liberalism is an inferior philosophy and it can not withstand scrutiny

Sen. Stabenow wants hearings on radio ‘accountability’; talks fairness doctrine

Michael Calderone’s Blog on The Politico has a brief summary of Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow’s conversation on Bill Press’s radio show.  Press asks Senator Stabenow if it is time to bring back the Fairness Doctrine.  Here is her response:

“I think it’s absolutely time to pass a standard. Now, whether it’s called the Fairness Standard, whether it’s called something else — I absolutely think it’s time to be bringing accountability to the airwaves. I mean, our new president has talked rightly about accountability and transparency. You know, that we all have to step up and be responsible. And, I think in this case, there needs to be some accountability and standards put in place.”

I was under the impression that Senators take some kind of oath about protecting the Constitution.  This woman clearly has no understanding of the real intent of the First Amendment.  It specifically protects political speech, even political speech that the Democratic majority finds offensive.  The Fairness Doctrine was morally wrong and unconstitutional when it was first imposed and it would be morally wrong and unconstitutional today.  The ability to speak freely in the arena of political debate is fundamental to America.  American political writers like Thomas Paine and Samuel Adams fueled the Revolution by informing and energizing the masses.  Today, Conservatives count on Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingram and others on talk radio to perform the same Constitutionally-protected function.

I have always found it interesting that liberals that push for the Fairness Doctrine only target talk radio, which is largely Conservative.  Senator Stabenow, will your “standards” and “accountability” version of the Fairness Doctrine also apply to The New York Times, The Washington Post, The L.A. Times, The Seattle Times and other newspapers?  What about Time, People, US Weekly, Newsweek, Vanity Fair…do I need to go on?  What about network news on ABC, NBC, CBS?  Where in the hell is the fairness on those networks?  How about cable news on CNN, CNN Headline News, MSNBC, etc?  Are you going to require the Daily Kos to also publish Ann Coulter?  Mark Steyn on Huffington Post?  Don’t you see the hypocrisy in targeting only one type of media…the one type of media that is known for political views that you don’t like?

Michael Calderone also points out one tiny little conflict of interest that Senator Stabenow has on this subject.  Stabenow is the wife of Tom Athans, who is a liberal talk radio executive.  Liberal talk radio is a colossal failure–perhaps Stabenow is still a little bitter.  Oh, and didn’t Hillary Clinton talk at some point during the Bush administration about how dissent and disagreement is patriotic?  Don’t be unpatriotic, Senator Stabenow!

Even intellectually honest liberals should admit that granting the government the right to shut down political dissent is a dangerous thing.  If you’d like to contact Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow, her direct phone number is 202-224-4822.  E-mail at http://stabenow.senate.gov/.

Unfortunately, she’s not the only Senator with censorship on her agenda.  The main Senate switchboard number is 202-224-3121.  The main House switchboard number is 202-225-3121.

Here’s a thought? How about capping salaries & benefits for bureaucrats?

Posted by Liberty on February 5, 2009

Executive pay cap could have unintended consequences

“By limiting annual pay to $500,000 and dishing out additional pay in restricted stock that can’t be cashed in until the government bailout money is paid back, a host of unintended consequences may result, ranging from a brain drain of top talent to a potentially less-generous approach to paying employees at other financial firms.”

Obama Lays Out Limits on Executive Pay

“The plan, which represents the most aggressive assault on executive pay by federal officials, includes salary caps of $500,000 for top executives at firms that accept ‘extraordinary assistance’ from the government.

It also restricts severance packages, known as ‘golden parachutes,’ for dismissed executives and requires the disclosure of policies on so-called luxury spending on things such as holiday parties, corporate jets and office renovations.”

The President has spoken.  He has waved his magic wand and limited how much money an executive can earn.  I would say, this is a good example why businesses should not accept government money.  [Although, some of those banks were strong-armed into accepting bail-out money just as strong-armed into making loans to uncreditworthy borrowers.]  A government with the power to give also has the power to take away.

So, here’s what I think.  What’s good for Wall Street ought to be good for all of those bureaucrats in D.C. and beyond.  How about some salary and benefit caps for people working for the government?

Oh, and by the way:

Obama’s Perks: Private Jet, Chef Tax-Free

“America’s CEOs are coming under fire these days not just for their hefty salaries but also for their use of private jets, limos with drivers and free trips to posh resorts.

But they aren’t alone in living this lavish lifestyle — the president of United States gets all these perks and more.

And unlike some of his Cabinet appointments, he doesn’t have to pay taxes on these benefits.

It might be a bit of a stretch to compare today’s corporate titans with the commander in chief, but some Wall Street bloggers clearly upset with President Obama’s attempts to rein in executive pay are doing just that.”

Interesting perspective coming from ABC news!

We’re all excited about the first African-American…RNC chair?

Posted by Liberty on February 3, 2009

I’ve been hearing joyful news-bites this morning about Eric Holder’s confirmation as the first African-American Attorney General.  It reminded me of something good that happened on Friday that didn’t get much play in the MSM.  Michael Steele was voted in as the new chair of the Republican National Committee.  And yes, he is an African-American.  That said, it is my opinion that the substance of a person is so much more important than style.  Character, principles and the capacity to lead are the criteria by which we should choose our leaders, not race and general “coolness.”

Michael Steele possesses the qualifications and the vision to lead the GOP back to the top.  He understands the importance of articulating a clear message of Conservatism.  Check out the RNC website for his “Blueprint for Tomorrow.”  That’s our guiding plan, guys.   He stresses the importance of leading with integrity, clearly defining the difference between Republicans and Democrats and upgrading our strategies to compete in the modern political arena.  I have to tell you, I’m optimistic about Michael Steele.  I have every hope that he will be a leader for Conservatives, not just party hacks.

An Obama appointee with integrity–she’s withdrawing!

Posted by Liberty on February 3, 2009

Performance Czar Killefer Withdraws Candidacy

I’m experiencing that feeling of deja vu this morning.  Yet another Obama appointee has tax issues!  Wow!  Let me predict what is going to be said about performance czarina Nancy Killefer’s tax problem.  “It was an honest mistake.”  Or perhaps, “She had a little glitch with her Turbo Tax.”

“Ms. Killefer, 55 years old, failed to pay employment taxes on household help for a year and a half, the Associated Press reported. In 2005, the AP said, the District of Columbia filed a $946.69 tax lien on her home for failure to pay the unemployment compensation tax. The error was resolved five months later.”

Oh…the old employment taxes on the household help.  Well, we’ve all had that problem, right?  I couldn’t find the box on the 1040 for that one, either.

As it turns out, though, silly excuses probably won’t be necessary.  Nancy Killefer is withdrawing her candidacy, saying that she doesn’t want her tax problems to be a distraction for the new administration.  There goes the only Obama appointee [so far] who possessed an ounce of shame.  Tom?  Tim?  What about you guys?

Oh, and one more thing.  How badly would the MSM be savaging tax-challenged appointees to a Republican administration?

Will Obama voters notice the hypocrisy here?

Posted by Liberty on February 3, 2009

Obama is forced to bend firm rule on hiring ex-lobbyists

Remember hearing Obama bashing lobbyists out on the campaign trail?  He used to say that he didn’t take their money and would not provide them with positions in his administration.  He used to accuse lobbyists of being part of the problem with how business works in Washington D.C.  He even went so far as to publicly make a rule against lobbyists in his administration.

And now, the bait and switch has been done all over again.  Notice the use of the word “forced.”  The A.P. headline writer has made a subtle effort to absolve Obama of responsibility.  What I have to wonder is this:  how will this play with the Hope-n-changer’s?  Will they even notice that Obama is now governing against his own campaign rhetoric?

Say bye bye to Blago

Prosecutor: ‘pattern of abuse’ by Ill. governor

“The prosecutor in the impeachment trial of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich says he’s proven ‘a pattern of abuse of power.’In his closing argument Thursday, prosecutor David Ellis said the evidence shows Blagojevich knew his conduct was improper.”

It looks like Blago’s goose is just about cooked.  I do have to give Blago credit for believing in himself–he’s been off on a media blitz this week, all the while proclaiming his innocence.  And this despite the tapes that the prosecutor has been playing for the jury.  You know the tapes…the ones you’ve heard on the news that clearly feature him talking about seeking favors or money for the messiah’s Senate seat.  Blago is either shamelessly dishonest or totally off his rocker.  Or both.

Oh, and I do have to give the AP credit.  They actually mentioned in this article that Blago is a Democrat.  Oh, really?  Hmm…I had no idea.  Of course, if the story were about a corrupt Republican, they would have put the word, “Republican” in the headline and 15 times throughout the article also.  Oh well.  Progress is progress.

The tolerant, open-minded Left attacks Rush Limbaugh

Posted by Liberty on January 28, 2009

Democrats Start Petition Against Rush Limbaugh

What is constitutionally protected free speech?  If you’re a liberal, it means calling former President George W. Bush “Hitler”…or worse.  It means calling Sarah Palin a “bimbo”…or worse.  It is wearing a t-shirt that says “Bong Hits for Jesus.”  It is pseudo art exhibits like crucifixes suspended in jars of urine or throwing shoes covered in red paint at a giant picture of former President Bush.  Free speech is for Jon Stewart, Al Franken, Chris Matthews, Rachel Maddow, Keith Olbermann…not for Rush Limbaugh.  Free speech is for the Dixie Chicks and every Hollywood twit who has yet to figure out that nobody cares what they think…just so long as they look pretty.  And saying anything negative about the messiah, Barack Obama?  That is crossing the line!

“If you had any questions remaining about the war liberals have launched to end conservative talk radio they should be answered by a petition the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee began ‘to show Rush Limbaugh and all of the Republicans what they’re up against if they start attacking President Obama.'”

That’s right…the tolerant, open-minded, free speech crusaders who will defend damn near anything [as long as it is offensive, crude and anti-Republican] are gunning for Rush Limbaugh.  Rush had the audacity to say that he hopes Obama fails.  And I agree with him.  Obama’s policies are counter to the principles that America was founded upon and will have disastrous effects upon our economy and our society as a whole.  Rush has the right to say things like this just as we all do.

But the Left aren’t content to just live and let live as far as free speech is concerned.  They are going to be pushing hard for the Fairness Doctrine because they want to shut Rush down.  The Fairness Doctrine won’t apply to print media, network tv news, cable tv news or any of the other places that the Left dominates our culture.  It will just muzzle Conservative talk radio.  That’s fair, right?  Of course it’s not fair and the liberal hypocrites know it…they just lack the intellectual honesty to admit it.

Obama’s approval rating…hmm, how come no pollsters ever call my house?

Posted by Liberty on January 19, 2009

Inauguration: Obama approval rating high

That link will take you to a little blurb in today’s Seattle P-I where they claim that Obama’s approval rating is approximately 76%.  I don’t know why it even grabbed my attention anymore but I saw it and just laughed out loud.  I guess if we’ve elected him President of the United States–unarguably the most powerful position on the planet–based on absolutely no genuine accomplishments and an amorphous agenda of liberalism disguised as a good kind of change, then what the heck!  100% approval rating!  Excellent!  Outstanding!  He’ll probably win 100% of the re-election vote in 4 years, too.

So if this guy isn’t smart enough to fill out a tax form, is he smart enough to be in charge at Treasury?

Posted by Liberty on January 14, 2009

Tax problems may plague Obama’s treasury pick

I hope tax problems plague Obama’s treasury pick!  I know that scrutiny of “the chosen one” and his cabinet appointments is not the hip thing to do right now but seriously folks!  Are we going to forget about the way that the Left in this country treated people appointed by Conservatives?  Bork, Gonzales, Roberts, Alito, Thomas…do those names mean anything to you?  We as Conservatives, not to mention the MSM, should be asking serious questions about Obama [although it’s a little late for that, agreed?!] and the people that he’s choosing for his cabinet.

“A Capitol Hill grilling is likely for Timothy Geithner, President-elect Barack Obama’s pick to head the Treasury Department, after public revelations he failed to pay $34,000 in taxes several years ago. Senate Democrats are pressing to schedule a quick confirmation hearing for Geithner on Friday, hoping to tee up swift approval of his nomination on Inauguration Day. But newly released information about the tax goofs by Geithner, regarded as a brilliant financial markets specialist well-positioned to deal with the nation’s considerable economic problems, could complicate the process.”

Oops.  $34,000 in unpaid taxes.  Just a little goof!

Inauguration-mania

Posted by Liberty on January 12, 2009

Rush is calling it the “Immaculate Inauguration.”  Michelle Malkin calls it “Inaugur-A-Palooza.”  I think the word “mania” has to apply somewhere to the shameless crap that the MSM is calling “inauguration coverage.”  Michelle Malkin has linked to another blog [http://www.julescrittenden.com/] where there’s a complete compendium of the MSM’s fawning, obsequious, laudatory, self-congratulatory, worshipful,…[insert your favorite applicable adjective <here>] “objective coverage” of the Obamanauguration.

Spending or slashing–which is it?

State Budget: Legislature has unique opportunity

In the editorial section on the [doomed] Seattle P-I’s web page today, this headline caught my eye.  We do have a new session of the Washington State legislature beginning January 12.  With a huge budget gap looming, the potential for new taxes is something we need to be on the lookout for.  The economy undoubtedly has some role in the budget crisis but the main problem is spending.  Of the Governor’s budget, House Minority leader Richard DeBolt said that it was a good start but that the problem lies with spending, not revenue.

Rather than facing the spending problem, however, Democrats are doubling down on the policies that have brought Washington to a $6+ billion deficit.

“At a briefing last week, Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown, D-Spokane, said legislators need to look for more alternatives to the governor’s budget. House Speaker Frank Chopp, D-Seattle, even added spending ideas, talking about new transportation partnerships and health care. ‘We’re serious about keeping the state’s promise to have health care coverage for every child by 2010,’ he said. On top of that, Democrats will propose an economic stimulus package this week.”

Of course, the P-I editorial board supports quite a bit of the Democrat spending agenda–especially the bit about health care coverage for children.  How could anyone say no to the children, after all?  [How about opening up competition in the health insurance market so more parents could afford to take responsibility for insuring their children themselves?!]  At the end of the article, they do mention the idea of trimming the scope of the state government.  I think this is where the real solution to the budget crisis is at but unfortunately, the P-I treats the issue more as a symbolic measure than a concrete one.

“The state budget picture is going to grow worse (we can only imagine what December’s sales tax figures will look like) and the Legislature is not going to succeed if the discussion centers on cutting budgets. There should be an emphasis on strategy before numbers. Can state agencies and programs be combined? Are there more programs that can be eliminated entirely? (For example, commissions and boards don’t add big numbers to the budget, but they are symbolic about the many branches of government. Trimming them would a clear way to signal a leaner government.)”

I think the P-I may be headed in the right direction here but let’s get past the symbolism and more to the substance, shall we?  By all means, dump the boards and commissions, along with all of the time, manpower and money that they waste.  And continue cutting from there!

Did you catch ABC’s “Ugly Americans?”

Posted by Liberty on January 10, 2009

I didn’t watch this show but did see the promo for it the other day.  ABC apparently is running some kind of a hidden camera show and they had a segment featuring an “American” couple in Paris.  The promo showed them gasping that the Eiffel tower was almost just like that tower they have in Las Vegas [but not as big], wearing matching George Bush t-shirts and generally being noisy and offensive to the suave, sophisticated Europeans.  When I read up on the show online, my suspicions were confirmed–this supposedly entertaining little segment was yet another George Bush smear from the main stream media.  The Left is relentless–even with their chosen one in office, they are still hard at work bashing Conservatives, Republicans and George Bush.

ABC’s ‘Ugly Americans’: Obnoxious George Bush Supporters

“These actors went out of their way to be literally as obnoxious as possible. The ‘wife’ was ridiculously rambunctious at every turn, and the ‘husband’ began singing the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ when their boat left its dock, and actually shouted ‘George Bush!’(why??) when posing for snapshots. Yeah, sure sounds like a  ‘typical’ American to me.

The kicker of the segment was when the ‘couple’ stopped by a local café. After bewildering the other patrons with their ridiculous antics, commentator John Quiñones offers the kicker (on part 2 of the segment, at approx. -04:39 on the video):

QUIÑONES: Apparently not everyone’s amused by our couple’s t-shirts — or their politics. This woman is German.

GERMAN WOMAN: This is nearly as if I had a t-shirt: ‘I Like Hitler,’ you know?”

ABC’s not-so-subtle message:  George Bush = Hitler.

ABC’s pathetically transparent agenda brings to mind something that Rush was talking about this week.  He made the point that the Left owns the popular culture in America.  Astute Conservatives may be highly attuned to spotting the biases in everything from commercials to news broadcasts but not everyone examines the world at large with a political magnifying glass.  The casual media consumer is inundated with Left-wing bias.  My question is, how do Conservatives counter it?

Baltimore mayor indicted–guess which party?

Posted by Liberty on January 9, 2009

On the way home from the grocery store this afternoon, I heard a quick blip on the indictment of Baltimore mayor, Sheila Dixon.  Because the newscaster did not mention a political party in connection with Dixon, I deduced that she must be a Democrat and made a mental note to check it out when I got home.  Of course, my supposition was correct.  Sheila Dixon is a Democrat and she has been indicted on 12 counts resulting from a corruption investigation.  The radio station I was listening to carries ABC news but they weren’t the only ones leaving the word “Democrat” out of the broadcast.  According to Newsbusters, CNN anchor Kyra Phillips failed to identify Dixon as a Democrat…inadvertently, I’m sure.

Marvin Hier on the conflict in Gaza and the double standard Jews face around the world

Posted by Liberty on January 8, 2009

Since the Israelis went on their most recent offensive, I’ve been wondering how exactly the main stream media can justify their blatantly biased coverage.  But then again, I wonder how they can justify their blatantly biased coverage of plenty of issues.  This feeling is nothing new to me.  We’re expected to believe that the Palestinians [led by the terrorist organization, Hamas] are the innocent victims here and the Israelis are launching a “disproportionate” attack.  Marvin Hier in today’s Wall Street Journal has laid out the situation brilliantly.

The Jews Face a Double Standard

“At the U.N., no surprise, this double-standard is in full force. In response to Israel’s attack on Hamas, the Security Council immediately pulled an all-night emergency meeting to consider yet another resolution condemning Israel. Have there been any all-night Security Council sessions held during the seven months when Hamas fired 3,000 rockets at half a million innocent civilians in southern Israel? You can be certain that during those seven months, no midnight oil was burning at the U.N. headquarters over resolutions condemning terrorist organizations like Hamas. But put condemnation of Israel on the agenda and, rain or shine, it’s sure to be a full house.”

He also points out:

“Red Cross officials are all over the Gaza crisis, describing it as a full-blown humanitarian nightmare. Where were they during the seven months when tens of thousands of Israeli families could not sleep for fear of a rocket attack? Where were their trauma experts to decry that humanitarian crisis?

There have been hundreds of articles and reports written from the Erez border crossing falsely accusing Israel of blocking humanitarian supplies from reaching beleaguered Palestinians in Gaza. (In fact, over 520 truck loads of humanitarian aid have been delivered through Israeli crossings since the beginning of the Israeli counterattack.) But how many news articles, NGO reports and special U.N. commissions have investigated Hamas’s policy of deliberately placing rocket launchers near schools, mosques and homes in order to use innocent Palestinians as human shields?

Many people ask why there are so few Israeli casualties in comparison with the Palestinian death toll. It’s because Israel’s first priority is the safety of its citizens, which is why there are shelters and warning systems in Israeli towns. If Hamas can dig tunnels, it can certainly build shelters. Instead, it prefers to use women and children as human shields while its leaders rush into hiding.”

Brilliance on the auto bailout from Mark Steyn

Posted by Liberty on December 22, 2008

Can You Still See the USA in Your Chevrolet?

According to Mark, “Route 66 is looking ever more like a one-way dead-end street to Bailoutistan.”

And, he points out:

“General Motors, like the other two geezers of the Old Three, is a vast retirement home with a small loss-making auto subsidiary. The UAW is the AARP in an Edsel: It has three times as many retirees and widows as “workers” (I use the term loosely). GM has 96,000 employees but provides health benefits to a million people.”

I love Mark Steyn’s learned perspective and smart, satirical humor.  Great article!

Media bias: not just against Conservatives anymore?

Posted by Liberty on December 18, 2008

I heard David Boze discussing this on his radio show yesterday afternoon and thought it was interesting.  This story is linked on his blog.  He was describing how he was reading this report on his lunch hour and was laughing out loud [in some un-named public place] at how ridiculous it is.  It literally is a laugh a minute, if you can get over the fact that a public university is wasting money researching the media’s portrayal of homelessness.  Do not interpret my mirth over this report to mean that I think homelessness is funny, because it’s not.  The homeless being used as a political football–that’s what I think is funny.

Is the media unfair to the homeless?

A gaggle of English professors [among others] at the University of Washington conducted a study of how homelessness is portrayed in the media.  They focused specifically on media coverage of the City of Seattle’s clean-ups of homeless encampments and have concluded that the camps are unfairly portrayed as dirty, drug-laden and dangerous.

Well, not everyone can exist in the cushy, tenured subjectivity of a university liberal arts department.  Words have concrete definitions and certain situations warrant that specific words be used.  I’m guessing that the journalists who have written about these squatters’ camps are correct to describe the camps as garbage-strewn, unsanitary and a threat to public safety.

Perhaps the UW team could have rounded up some creative writing professors to formulate a list of more colorful language so that the words “dirty” and “dangerous” wouldn’t be so over used.  Instead of “dirty” and “dangerous,” the journalists could use: vile, sordid, tainted, toxic, insalubrious, obscene, perilous, unlawful, obnoxious, objectionable, repugnant or intolerable.

Hot Air follow up to AP’s shameless global warming lies

Posted by Liberty on December 17, 2008

Fellow news junkies, remember the AP story from December 14 on global warming by Seth Borenstein?

Obama left with little time to curb global warming

“When Bill Clinton took office in 1993, global warming was a slow-moving environmental problem that was easy to ignore. Now it is a ticking time bomb that President-elect Barack Obama can’t avoid.”

This story has been criticized for it’s blatant bias and factual inaccuracy and finally, that criticism is seeing the light of day.  From Hot Air blog:

Scientists scoff at AP global-warming story

They have a few quotes from actual scientists [note: Al Gore is not a scientist, Mr. Borenstein] debunking this ridiculous article.  Also, from Fox News:

Scientists Call AP Report on Global Warming ‘Hysteria’

“Scientists skeptical of the assertion that climate change is the result of man’s activites are criticizing a recent Associated Press report on global warming, calling it ‘irrational hysteria, ‘horrifically bad’ and ‘incredibly biased.’

They say the report, which was published on Monday, contained sweeping scientific errors and was a one-sided portrayal of a complicated issue.”

Thank you, NewsBusters for confirming what I already knew

MRC/NB’s Graham on Cavuto Discussing Media Dropping the (D) in Blago Coverage

“‘This is a pattern we’ve seen for many years, especially when it comes to scandal. We call it drop the (D). You see stories like this [Blagojevich],’ all the time NewsBusters Senior Editor Tim Graham told FNC’s Neil Cavuto. While some print outlets just bury the Democratic label deep within an article, ‘a lot of times on television we’re not seeing that [the party label] at all. We’ve seen that in the Blagojevich coverage. You could have watched CBS today and not found a single mention,’ that the indicted Illinois Governor is a Democrat, Graham added.”

Oprah says she doesn’t need a job from Obama–she’ll do his work for free!

Oprah: I’m Not Seeking Job With Obama

“Although Oprah Winfrey worked hard on Barack Obama’s presidential election campaign, she never considered going to work for the president-elect’s administration, the talk show host said Friday.”

She’s much more valuable to Obama as celebrity mouthpiece.

“Earlier this week, Winfrey’s production company confirmed she would host her Chicago-based talk show to Washington for at least two episodes during inauguration week. She’ll have a live show from the Kennedy Center Opera House one day before the ceremony, and tape another one on Jan. 21.”

The question is, will her viewers be smart enough to interpret her biases?  Ironic that her show would not be subject to the Fairness Doctrine but Conservative talk radio would be silenced.

Great perspective on Big Three bailout from Carpe Diem

Posted by Liberty on December 5, 2008

Professor Mark J. Perry of Carpe Diem blog fame has been consistently posting good info on the plight of the Big Three automakers.  He’s been especially highlighting the fact that union labor contracts have been a major reason that the Big Three are no longer competitive.  The MSM is handling the union with kid gloves, but that’s nothing new.  For instance, what do you know about the Job Bank?  The Job Bank is a union-backed program where laid-off autoworkers can collect up to 95% of their wages and benefits.  That’s right–the Big Three have been paying union workers, even when they’re not working.  Hmm…have Honda or Toyota been hamstrung by this kind of program?  The answer is no, because they employ non-union workers and consequently haven’t had the UAW gun to their heads.  Read Professor Perry’s brilliant post: Cost of Jobs Bank 2005-2008: $4,200,000,000.

Google ‘censoring’ anti-Obama bloggers?

Google ‘censoring’ anti-Obama bloggers?

“Pamela Geller of Atlas Shrugs claims the search engine giant has banned her groundbreaking articles about Obama-a technique many people refer to as ‘sandboxing.'”

Hmm…Google, getting a head start on the Fairness Doctrine?  Look for more suppression of free speech as the Obama administration gets rolling–this guy can’t take criticism and the MSM (including Google, apparently) is going to continue to help him out.
